Reviewing The Sixth Day

Posted by ekmisao at 10:05 AM on November 6, 2004 as a favorite post.

On The Sixth Day, the god of music reflected on his work. He saw that it was still good, and re-released them. On The Seventh Night, the god of music rested from all his rock, and revamped his songs as acoustics. He saw that it was good.

I'm here to review The Sixth Day, the "Gackt greatest hits" album with a twist. This is to give those who want to buy it, borrow it, or download it, a little idea of what to expect.

Overall, it's a great buy, Gackt newbie or veteran alike. For newbies, it's a great way to know the best of what Gackt can offer. It gives a good combination of his hard rock pieces, the slow sentimental pieces, and those in between. For oldies, it's a great refresher course on Gackt-ology. Some of the songs had an overhaul, many were tweaked and cleaned to be better than before. The result is a great set of music that makes you reminisce and applaud.

These are my opinions alone. If you object, or you think I have things wrong, feel free to comment at the end.

Major changes:
-- OASIS
-- Vanilla
-- Secret Garden
-- Mizerable

GacktJOB got back into the recording studio, and revamped the songs. You especially notice the change in Gackt's singing style, from the formerly half-screaming to the more mellow current style. Some people object to the new singing style, saying it's less powerful. I disagree. To me it sounds more rounded, and more controlled than before. It just says that he's found a better way to sing.

The revamp of Oasis is incredible, it's like a new but familiar piece. The changes to Secret Garden makes dreaming of that subway that much nicer. The high point of Mizerable is the emphasis on the violin parts (go You-san!), and the obvious change in Gackt's singing. Vanilla is smoother than before; he does a high second voice in a short part, and the music is not as blaring.

Minor changes:
--Wasurenai Kara
--Last Song
--Sekirei~seki-ray~
--Saikai~Story~
--Kimi no Tame ni Dekiru Koto
--Lu:Na

Either these songs were re-recorded, or are remixes of original tracks. Either way, the songs still feel much the same way they did before, but with obvious changes to either Gackt's singing or the music.

The Last Song remix here is neat, but I still love the acoustic version in 7th Night best. The words are clearer and better pronounced in Sekirei~seki-ray~, and emphasis on the piano trills was placed. I'm a sucker for Saikai~story~, and loved how the whispered words improved quite a bit. The oddest change was the addition of synthesized keyboarding to the opening of Kimi no Tame ni Dekiru Koto. For a few seconds you find yourself in a big cathedral with a large church organ, and Gackt's voice booming in the middle of it. ^_^ Lu:Na gets a revamp in the electric guitar work, and the creepy original voice is thrown out for a nicer one.

Track cleanups:
--Tsuki no Uta
--Kimi ga Oikaketa Yume
--Another World
--Mirror

The original tracks were tweaked, shined, and polished. They're now better than ever. Better emphasis on certain instrument sections, toning down of others. Some of the changes are hard to catch, but when you listen again to the originals you'll know that they improved.

For Mirror, I thought the acoustic version was rather messy, but I like it better than the original. Improvements were made to the guitar work in Another World.

Den insists there are differences between the original and the 6th Day version of the Texhnolyze ending theme. Aside from more emphasis on the violin and guitar (go You-san!), I don't hear it, and probably, so do most people. There ARE changes, but there are mostly on technicalities that are very hard to catch. I actually like it that Tsuki no Uta didn't change. For the life of me, I could not see how he could possibly improve on a perfectly great song, the song that made me a Gackt fan.

Since revamps are interspersed with remixes, and slow songs are alternated with fast songs, it makes for great variety among the 14 tracks in the album. Most albums drag around the end or the middle. Not this one. I would not be surprised if, at the end of 14 tracks, you would still want more.

I would also highly suggest to get your hands on the 6th Day/7th Night concert. It's quite a different album of itself, if it were compiled, a combination of the best of both albums, and a few of the original pieces that are in neither. (Example: Papa lapped a pap lopped and U+K were done the original way, not the acoustic versions of 7th Night) Also, the concert versions of Mizerable, Last Song, and Saikai~story~ are actually better than those in the albums.

I saw his handiwork, and thought it was good. You would, too.
